The Nuss Procedure for Pectus Excavatum
Sunken Chest surgery
Dr. Barry
E. LoSasso is a board-certified pediatric surgeon who has
worked with Dr. Donald Nuss at the Children’s Hospital of the
King’s Daughter in Norfolk, Virginia since 1999, and has
developed a successful Nuss program at the Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego in San Diego, California. The program has
completely mirror-imaged the protocol established at King’s
Daughter’s, with an on-going relationship with Dr. Nuss for
continuing updates and improvements in our pectus program.
Dr. LoSasso
has repaired over 150 cases of pectus excavatum (commonly known as)
sunken chest with the Nuss
procedure and removed over 50 Nuss bars thus far. He has trained a
superior operating room staff and worked with the superb pain
management team at Children’s to perfect the post-operative
pain care provided. Another integral piece of the care is the
nursing staff who is provided with educational training
specifically tailored to the post-operative care of pectus
defect patients.
In over 150 Nuss patients, Dr LoSasso has had no bar migrations, and only
2 postoperative wound infections. These wound infections were
treated with antibiotics, allowing one patient to complete his
two year course with the bar, and then have his Nuss bar
successfully removed. The second patient continued with his
bar in place without further infectious issues after a
two-week course of antibiotics.
Dr. LoSasso
successfully continues to maintain the perfection and stamp of
approval in earning
Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego in San Diego the West
Coast Nuss center.
