Instructions: After the Surgery

PECTUS EXCAVATUM CORRECTIONS AFTER THE SURGERY

 

• Your Child will go to the Monitored Medical/Surgical Floor.

   Your child will have a lot of medicine, to keep him/her sleepy and pain free. These medicines are given through the tube in his/her back and IV.

•  Your child will not receive anything to eat or drink for the first few days.

•  Your child will have x-ray pictures done every morning to check his/her lungs and make sure that the bar remains in good position.

•  It is very important that your child not move around during the first day or two after the operation. This will help the bar to stay in place.

•  After the second or third day. Your child will be moved to a regular floor. The plastic tubes in his/her back and bladder may be removed at this time.

•  The nurses will help him/her to get up. There are special ways that your child needs to move so that the bar does not move.

•  Your child needs to take deep breaths and to get up out of bed and walk as much as possible. This will help him/her to breathe better.

•  Your child will be able to move around better every day and will be sent home as soon as he/she is able to get up end walk around without problems.
